Arshavin joins elite band of Arsenal players
Andrey Arshavin joined an elite band of Arsenal players on Tuesday night.
The Russian playmaker became only the 10th Gunner to score four or more goals in an away game when he grabbed a stunning quartet in the 4-4 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.
Bobby Turnbull was the first Arsenal player to achieve this rare feat when he struck four times at Blackburn on New Year's Day, 1923.
Here are three more of the men who went before Arshavin.
Julio Baptista - 4 goals
Liverpool (a) - League Cup - January 9, 2007
Julio Baptista scored four times as Arsenal routed Liverpool in the last eight of the Carling Cup. 'The Beast' netted a free-kick and a tap-in as Arsenal opened up a 4-1 lead in the first half. Baptista missed a penalty before firing in from 20 yards to complete his hat-trick. The Brazilian scored his fourth from close range as Arsenal held off a Liverpool comeback to take their place in the Semi-Finals. It was the first time in nearly 77 years that Liverpool had conceded six goals at home.
Tony Woodcock - 5 goals
Aston Villa (a) - League - October 29, 1983
The England striker netted an impressive 21 goals in the 1983/84 campaign and boosted his tally that season with an individual scoring spree at Aston Villa. In October 1983, Woodcock netted five times as Arsenal romped to a 6-2 win. Woodcock's feat was set a new post-war record for Arsenal but he fell short of the Club record. That is still held by Ted Drake who, ironically, scored seven times in a 7-1 win against the same opponents at the same venue in December 1935.
David Herd - 4 goals
Everton (a) - League - September 6, 1958
David Herd ruled Goodison Park for 90 minutes in September 1958. The Scottish star had broken into the Arsenal side two seasons earlier and topped the Club's scoring charts for four consecutive campaigns. Herd was at his ruthless best at Everton, scoring four goals as the Gunners cruised to a 6-1 victory.
