Chelsea No.2 Wilkins Hints At Striker Quest
Ray Wilkins feels that Chelsea must spend during the impending January transfer window...
Chelsea's assistant boss Ray Wilkins has indicated that the Blues, despite the board's frequent statements suggesting the contrary, have not given up on landing a new striker in January.
Didier Drogba has looked impressive since his return from long-term injury and recent suspension, bagging a goal in the capital side's 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Boxing Day.
Furthermore, Nicolas Anelka has been in stunning goal-scoring form this season.
However, Wilkins is concerned about what remains a lack of depth and refuses to dismiss the idea of boss Luiz Felipe Scolari adding a new face in January.
"We have got the injury situation haven't we?" Wilkins asked suggestively.
"We have supplemented Didier's injury with the players we have here, while Nicolas' goals have been top drawer. From that aspect we are thrilled.
"However, if you lose both in the same game, you always need cover. Otherwise, we are not going to progress through the Premier League."
The assistant boss, then, feels that the Blues' title challenge could be seriously dented by an unwillingness to open the chequebook in the new year.
