Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti will be without the services of Portugal international Jose Bosingwa for some time as the right-back has gone under the knife in a bid to rid him of a problematic knee injury, according to Mirror Sport.

Bosingwa, who transferred to the Blues in the summer of 2008 after a prominent role with Porto, returned to his homeland in order to be assessed by a specialist in Lisbon.

After consultation between Chelsea physios and the specialists, it was agreed that the ligament would require surgery in order to prevent a worsening of the problem.

Bosingwa will therefore be out of action for around three months, and will miss key club fixtures against Arsenal at Ashburton Grove, Manchester City at Eastlands, and Everton at home.

The defender will also be absent from Portugal's crucial World Cup qualification play-off with Bosnia.

Portugal manager Carlos Queiroz is reported to have said: "We have spoken with Bosingwa to try to lift his spirits and it's a bad blow to be without him for the play-offs.

"But we wish him well for his recuperation for his club, and also to be available for the World Cup, where hopefully we will be next summer."
Branislav Ivanovic and Juliano Belletti are expected to deputise for Bosingwa in the Chelsea team.
